Toxic Sludge in Hungary

On October 4, 2010, an accident occurred at the Ajkai Timföldgyár alumina plant in southern Hungary. A corner wall of a retaining pond broke, releasing a torrent of toxic red sludge. According to news reports, a wall of waste thundered down a local stream, inundating several nearby towns, including Kolontar and Devecser, where the sludge was 2 meters (6.5 feet) deep in places. Four people were killed immediately, likely from drowning, and several more were missing. Dozens of residents were hospitalized for chemical burns.

The toll rose to four dead, six missing and at least 120 people injured after a reservoir failed Monday at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar plant in Ajka, a town 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of Budapest, the capital.

Several hundred tons of plaster were being poured into the Marcal River to bind the toxic sludge and prevent it from flowing on, the National Disaster Management Directorate said.

So far, about 35.3 million cubic feet (1 million cubic meters) of sludge has leaked from the reservoir, affecting an estimated 15.4 square miles (40 square kilometers), Environmental Affairs State Secretary Zoltan Illes told the state news wire MTI.

Illes called the flood an "ecological catastrophe" and said the sludge could reach the Raba and Danube rivers. He suspended activity at the plant and ordered the company to repair the damaged reservoir.

The disaster agency said 390 residents had to be temporarily relocated and 110 were rescued from the flooded towns, including Kolontal, Devecser and Somlovasarhely. Firefighters and soldiers swept through the region Tuesday carrying out cleanup tasks with bulldozers.

Sunlight illuminated the lingering oil slick off the Mississippi Delta on May 24, 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image the same day.

Oil smoothes the ocean surface, making the Sun’s reflection brighter in some places, and reducing the scattering of sunlight in other places. As a result, the oil slick is brighter than the surrounding water in some places (image center) and darker than the surrounding water in others (image lower right). The tip of the Mississippi Delta is surrounded by muddy water that appears light tan. Bright white ribbons of oil streak across this sediment-laden water.

Ash from Iceland’s erupting Eyjafjallajökull Volcano had drifted over northern Europe by April 16, 2010. The brown ash is mixed with clouds in this photo-like image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite at 12:45 p.m. local time (GMT +2). The visible ash sweeps in an arc across the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Russia. It is likely that the clouds mask additional ash.

The airborne ash grounded flights across much of northern and western Europe starting on April 15. As the ash moved south, more countries began to close their airspace. Fine volcanic ash can clog jet engines, causing the engines to stall. Many airports anticipated remaining closed through Saturday, April 17, reported BBC News. Ash had been reported over Norway, Sweden, northwestern Russia, northern Poland, northern Germany, northern France and the southern United Kingdom, said the Icelandic Met Office.

ο ωραίος Μεργκαέλ παίρνει των ομματιών του

Σήμερα το πρωί, ο ωραίος Mεργκαέλ Ωγκαίο ξύπνησε και έτριψε τα μάτια του να ανοίξουν. Οπως τα έτριβε, κατάλαβε ότι το δεξί του μάτι δεν ήταν ακριβώς μάτι. Η ξανάστροφη της δεξιάς του παλάμης άγγιζε κάτι τι σκληρό και κρύο. Το δεξί του μάτι δεν άνοιγε με τίποτα. Ετρεξε πανικόβλητος στον καθρέφτη του λουτρού του και είδε -με το αριστερό του μάτι- τί συνέβαινε: στη θέση του δεξιού του ματιού, βρισκόταν ένα αλουμινένιο κουτάκι από αναψυκτικό! Κούνησε το κεφάλι του δεξιά-αριστερά και κατάλαβε ότι το κουτάκι ήταν άδειο. «Λες να είναι το κουτάκι από το αναψυκτικό που ήπια χτες το βράδυ;» αναρωτήθηκε «αλλά πάλι, το κουτάκι εκείνο το πέταξα» συνέχισε τη σκέψη του «μόνο που δεν θυμάμαι ακριβώς πού...» το μυαλό του έψαχνε απεγνωσμένα την αιτία της μεταμόρφωσης του ματιού του από μάτι σε κουτάκι αλουμινίου. «Μυστήρια πράγματα συμβαίνουν στον κόσμο που ζούμε...» μουρμούρισε μέσα από τα δόντια του και πήρε των ομματιών του κι εγκατέλειψε τη σκατοχώρα όπου μέχρι τότε ζούσε.
